The ways in
E-mail address and password. The password is 12 to 128 characters.
A passkey, if you have added one: your fingerprint, your face or your device PIN, with no password at all.
A second step, if the account has one: a code from your authenticator app, a code by SMS when that is the only factor set up, or a recovery code.
When a second step is asked for
The account asks for whatever it has, strongest first. An authenticator app or a passkey always takes precedence over SMS; a code by SMS can never replace or switch off either of them.
If the second step is a code by SMS, nothing is sent until you ask for it. The code takes a few seconds to arrive, it lasts ten minutes, and five wrong tries burn it — ask for another one rather than guessing.
When the sign-in is refused
What you see | What it means |
The password is not accepted | The address or the password is wrong. Neither is confirmed, on purpose. If you cannot remember it, use "Forgotten password?" |
A second step is asked for and you cannot answer it | Use a recovery code. Each works once. |
The passkey is not accepted | That passkey is not registered on this account, or the device is not the one holding it. Your password and second step still work. |
Too many attempts | Sign-ins are rate-limited. Wait, then try again. |
Your network or device was restricted | An automatic decision. Write to support; do not keep retrying. |
A sign-in from an unusual network
A sign-in from a network Quavern flags as higher-risk may ask for an additional check. It never asks for a payment card: card verification was removed, and a code by SMS replaced it everywhere.
Sessions
The security page lists every active browser session, with its last activity, and flags a session seen through a proxy or VPN. Ending a session there forces that browser to sign in again. Changing your password ends every session, including the one you are using.
If none of this works
Write to [email protected] from the address on the account if you can, and say which of the steps above refused you and what the support code was.
